The Kerfkore Flexible Panel is Now Soflex
June 5, 2024Big news from Kerfkore HQ! Our most popular flexible panel, Kerfkore, will now be known as…drumroll please — Soflex!
So, why the change? As the Kerfkore brand name grows and our line of products expand, we want to make it easier for customers to differentiate between our product and our company, which ensures a smoother purchasing process.
The Same Flexible Panel You Love
When Prince changed his name to a symbol and went by The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, he still released incredible music. Not to compare ourselves to Prince (but let’s do it anyway), even though Kerfkore panels will be known as Soflex, they’ll still have the same flexible, dynamic qualities you know. Let’s check ‘em out!
Soflex Materials
It starts with the high-quality materials of Kerfkore — the facing and core that combine to make up our flagship flexible panel.
- The LTX Flexible Backer of Soflex has 21 mil thickness, high tensile strength, and is compatible with high-pressure laminates, two-ply/phenolic backed/20mil paper backed veneers, and many other semirigid finishes.
- Standard Soflex cores are built with particleboard but plywood and MDF are also available.
Soflex Features
Your creativity is the only limit on what’s possible with Soflex. Here are the key features to consider when working with the panel formerly known as Kerfkore.
- Dynamic 3.5 inch bending radius
- Stable base layer
- Able to be laminated flat, then formed
- Edgeband ready
- Available in a wide range of thicknesses, from ⅜” to 11/16”
- Panel sizes for a variety of projects, from 48” x 120” to 61” to 97”
- Works well with decorative surfacing materials such as high-pressure laminates, two-ply veneers, phenolic-backed veneers, 20mil paper-backed veneers, and metals
Soflex in Action
One of our favorite Soflex projects to highlight is from an industrial design student who used Soflex to create playground equipment that would be accessible for children with special needs.
The student, Jacqueline, worked with a physical therapist to research cerebal palsy and safety — hoping to design equipment that was safe, appealing, and fun, especially when compared to other more “medical-looking” equipment.
Jacqueline was able to make her vision a reality with the help of Soflex. To find out how she built, tested, and got the kids in her neighborhood involved read the full story here.
What Our Customers Say About Kerfkore Soflex
Despite a new name, Soflex has been trusted by fabricators, architects, and designers all over the United States for a long time. Here’s what they said about working with Soflex, back when it was still known as Kerfkore.
“Kerfkore was the only way to go on this project. We needed a way to fabricate a sequenced group of panels on a constantly changing radiused wall. This included vertical and horizontal reveals that had to align with alcoves and AV equipment. Other cores would require us to make forms for each and every panel. That was cost and time-prohibitive. Instead, we CNC cut supportive ribs to match the curve of each section to form the kerf into the correct shape. The reveal areas and rib locations were then machined into the back of each panel.”
- SAM CONLEY | OPERATIONS MANAGER, FALLSTON SUPPLY
“Kerfkore is easier than cutting/kerfing ourselves. Great product and easy to use.”
- KEVIN GROENKE | UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, COLLEGE OF DESIGN
“While we have made curved pieces with bending board and veneers previously this was our first attempt at building something with this kind of shape. I found the Kerfkore to be easier to work with than I expected. I don’t know if I could have or would have wanted to build this the old way. We did additional supports inside which I understand is overkill with Kerfkore. I would feel comfortable doing more shapes with Kerfkore in the future.”
- BRYAN EADS | THE BOOKCASE PLACE OF RICHMOND, INC.
“The Kerfkore product line allows our team to focus on what they are really good at doing, rather than dedicating an excessive amount of wasted time on unskilled administrative tasks such as sanding, filling flat areas with Bondo and unnecessary framework. This allows us to offer a better price to our customers.”
- WALTON SCOTT | QUALITY CABINET & FIXTURE COMPANY (SAN DIEGO, CA)
“The Kerfkore products have been invaluable for our company. Unlike bending ply, the substrate is strong from the top to the bottom eliminating bumps and imperfections. Thank you.”
- STEVE | MAX URBAN MILLWORK (BOYNTON BEACH, FL)
“Using Kerfkore we can create inlays in flat panels, then bend the panel. Applying inlays to already curved surfaces is tedious, if not impossible. Designers and architects have been delighted with the creative flexibility we can offer them.”
- DEAN HAFEY | DEAN’S CUSTOM FIXTURES (COLUMBUS, OH)
“In using Kerfkore products, I find it has saved me in time and labor over traditional methods. It gives me a consistent result every time. It also has expanded our ability to be creative for the customer.”
- ROGER SMITH | THIRD DAY CREATIONS
“[Kerfkore Products] provide stronger, better, and more reliable results compared to our old approach where we used layers of 3/8″ bendable plywood.
I knew that their product line would make a positive difference as soon as the manufacturer representative walked through our door. Currently, there is not a single section on our production floor that doesn’t contain one of the Kerfkore products.”
- WALTON SCOTT | QUALITY CABINET & FIXTURE COMPANY (SAN DIEGO, CA)
“Prior to using pre-kerfed substrates provided by Kerfkore Company, we painstakingly saw-kerfed plywood panels manually for use in radius millwork applications. Kerfkore Company’s flexible substrates have cut our skilled labor costs dramatically.
The variety of materials supplied by Kerfkore Company (Kerfkore, Timberflex, Flexboard and Worklite) lends itself to numerous applications and options: panels, doors, curtain walls, moldings and traditional curved millwork. We can use Kerfkore Products in applications where the weight of plywood panels would be impractical.”
